LDMG – Advice No. 9 – October 17, 2022 – 5.00pm

This is an update from the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) for the Balonne Shire.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) advise that there is the potential for thunderstorm activity in Western Queensland from tomorrow and further rain is forecast from this Wednesday. Limited rain fell in the Balonne catchments and therefore only small, renewed river and creek level rises are expected this week.

MUNGINDI

Barwon River at Mungindi was at 6.42m and falling at 2.00pm Monday 17/10/2022. BOM has indicated renewed rises to the moderate flood level (6.70m) are possible from the middle of the week (19-20 Oct) and further rises to the major flood level (7.20m) may occur over the weekend. Council crew and equipment remain on hand to monitor the levee bank.

DIRRANBANDI AND HEBEL

Small rises may continue in the Balonne River system. There is a minor flood warning on the Balonne River system with the Bokhara River at Hebel currently at 0.98m (below minor).

ROAD UPDATES

There is water over road at flood ways or low-lying areas across the region. These are expected to recede if no further rainfall occurs. Travellers are asked to proceed with caution:

• Castlereagh Highway (Hebel – Dirranbandi) – water over road and road damaged at various locations – proceed with caution

• Carnarvon Highway (to Mungindi) – water over road and roadworks in various locations between Nindigully and Mungindi – proceed with caution

• Balonne Highway (to Bollon) – open

• Moonie Highway (hazard notified approximately 25 kms east of Moonie) – proceed with caution

• Mitchell – St George Road – open

• Carnarvon Highway (to Surat) – open

Heading in and out of New South Wales across our border towns of Hebel and Mungindi should monitor road conditions carefully due to major flooding occurring in parts of New South Wales. Please use extreme caution as many roads have pavement damage.

Remember road conditions can change without notice
