LDMG - Advice No. 6 - October 9 2022 - 12.30pm

This is an update from the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) for the Balonne Shire.

Conditions have eased in Southwest Queensland. Rainfall totals between 40 - 60 mm were recorded across the Balonne River catchment during the last few days, including recent daily rainfall totals to 9am Sunday of 15 - 40 mm. Small, renewed river and creek level rises are expected this week from the recent rain, and the situation is being monitored. Further rain areas are forecast later this week, which is likely to result in renewed river level rises in the Condamine-Balonne River catchments.

MUNGINDI

Barwon River at Mungindi was at 6.97m and steady at 11.00am today. BOM had indicated a flow of up to 6.9m into Sunday but this may change with rainfall over night in the catchments. Earlier predictions were between 7.3m and 7.5m. Council crew and equipment remain on hand to monitor the levee bank.

DIRRANBANDI AND HEBEL

The outlook is further inflows down the Balonne River system from further upstream following the widespread rain over the catchment. There is a minor flood warning on the Balonne River system with the Bokhara River at Hebel currently at 1m (minor).

ROAD UPDATES

There is water over road on parts of all major Highways – and while still open travellers are asked to proceed with caution:

  • Castlereagh Highway (Hebel – Dirranbandi)
  • Carnarvon Highway (to Mungindi)
  • Balonne Highway (to Bollon)
  • Moonie Highway (in several locations to Dalby)
  • Mitchell – St George Road
  • Carnarvon Highway (to Surat)

Heading in and out of New South Wales across our border towns of Hebel and Mungindi should monitor road conditions carefully due to major flooding occurring in parts of New South Wales. Please use extreme caution as many roads have pavement damage. Current road conditions are:

  • Carnarvon Highway to Moree open with extreme caution at the Byra Crossing in NSW. The current alternate route is via Carrigan Way to Boomi, Boonangar Road to Garah and the Carnarvon Highway through to Moree.

Remember road conditions can change without notice
