Mayor welcomes Rex Airlines decision to resume flights
Balonne Shire Mayor Samantha O’Toole has welcomed the announcement by Regional Express (Rex) Airlines to resume a second flight to St George.
Rex’s Deputy Chairman the Hon John Sharp AM announced the resumption of services following the receipt of funding from both the Federal and State governments this week.
Cr O’Toole said the Shire had previously been serviced by Rex with two flights – one on Wednesday and one on Sunday – prior to the COVID-19 lock down.
“Since then we were fortunate to have one service weekly, but it is great to see we will again have two flights coming into St George,” she said.
“There has been a change to days of service with flights now coming in on Wednesday and Friday.
“This service is essential to our region and we thank the Federal and State Governments for supporting rural and remote communities during this pandemic.”
The Mayor applauds the extra measures Rex has initiated that go above and beyond their medical requirements such as enhanced cleaning of the aircraft cabin, service equipment and flight deck; removal of on-board pillows and blankets, temperature checking at check-in and spacing out passengers to facilitate social distancing.
“We believe these extra measures will assist in ensuring that people who are travelling out to our region are well and providing another level of protection to our wider community,” she said.
The Rex Western 1 service travels from Brisbane-Toowoomba (Wellcamp)- St George-Cunnamulla- Thargomindah return. Council has been advised that timings for this service are still being negotiated with Brisbane airport.
