Published on 09 April 2025

Balonne Local Disaster Management Group

The Balonne Local Disaster Management Group has moved from Stand Up to Lean Forward. Balonne Shire Council is continuing to monitor road conditions and river levels.

MUNGINDI

The Barwon River at Mungindi is expected to have an extended peak into next week. Levels are expected to remain within the level of minor flooding.

The Carnarvon Highway was re-opened this morning to high clearance vehicles with flooding levels expected to continue to drop at the most impacted section of the highway between Thallon and Mungindi.

Council will communicate when the Carnarvon Highway is safe for low clearance vehicles.

Waste collection services are being undertaken by the Moree Plains Shire Council.

RESUPPLY

Property owners that have been impacted throughout this are strongly encouraged to fill out the below Disaster Impact Survey.

DPI can assist with the supply of fodder for livestock, with Council to distribute throughout the Shire.

Should you or your neighbours on isolated properties be experiencing any need for resupply, please phone Council during business hours on 07 4620 8888 for further information.

PEST INSECT VECTOR SPRAYING

Balonne Shire Council will be commencing vector spraying in flood impacted communities to control mosquitoes and blackfly.

Larvicide baiting is occurring in Dirranbandi at this time to reduce the mosquito population and should be completed by Friday.

The vector spraying will occur at the following dates/times:

THURSDAY 10 APRIL

- 4:00am to 9:00am at Nindigully, Thallon and Mungindi

- 5:00pm to 9:00pm at Nindigully, Thallon and Mungindi

- 5:00pm to 9:00pm at Nindigully, Thallon and Mungindi

Please be aware there may be disturbance over this time period due to the flashing lights on the fogging vehicle.

Council asks that:

  • residents with dogs, please keep your dogs in the rear of your property (the vector is suitable for animals but the lights on the vehicle will make them bark and cause a nuisance to others).
  • bee keepers, please ensure bees are covered in the hive; and
  • fish owners, please cover any outside fishponds.

Should you require any further information, please call Council’s Manager of Environmental Services, Di Francisco on 0429 637 439.

At this time, residents should remove water from all vessels around the home that can breed mosquitoes such as buckets, wheelbarrows, bird baths, gutters and drains.

In the interim, residents are advised to cover up and use insect repellent to avoid mosquitoes.

DISASTER IMPACT SURVEY

Primary producers and agribusinesses are urged to complete the Disaster Impact Survey to report damages and losses to property and businesses in the Balonne Shire. This information helps inform the recovery needs of impacted communities.

Please take date-stamped photographs when safe to do so, to support any future applications for assistance.
