STATE OF ORIGIN FEVER LIGHTS UP THE BORDER IN MUNGINDI

State of Origin fever is arriving early in Mungindi, with the Barwon River Campsite set to glow blue and maroon ahead of Game One on 27 May as the community kicks off celebrations for this year’s Mungindi Border Battle.

In a playful nod to Australia’s greatest sporting rivalry, Balonne Shire Council is lighting up the campsite amenities in Queensland Maroon and NSW Blue, shining a spotlight on Mungindi’s rare claim to fame as the only town in Australia shared by two states, one postcode, and one proud community spirit.

The colourful display also marks the official lead-in to the 2026 Mungindi Border Battle on 17 June, where Queensland and New South Wales will once again go head-to-head in a fun-filled morning of friendly rivalry, fun challenges, and State of Origin-inspired antics.

Locals are already getting behind the event, helping Council staff light up the park ahead of kick-off and proving that while Origin may be mate versus mate, in Mungindi it is community first.

Balonne Shire Council Mayor Samantha O’Toole said the activation was all about building excitement and celebrating Mungindi’s unique cross-border identity.

“Only in Mungindi can you literally stand in one town and two states at once, so leaning into the State of Origin rivalry is a fun and natural way to celebrate the town and build momentum towards the Border Battle,” said Mayor O’Toole.

“We have quite a few surprises being lined up for the Border Battle on 17 June, which should make for an even bigger community event this year.”

Moree Plains Shire Council Mayor Cr Susannah Pearse said Mungindi may be a small community, but it is renowned for always being big on the fun!

“This year is our second Border Battle, and it is set to be just as hard fought as the last,” said Mayor Pearse.

"We look forward to seeing as many people as possible on the banks of the Barwon on the morning of Game II. May the best state win!"

With blue and maroon lights set to brighten the Barwon River, one thing is certain - Origin season has officially arrived in Mungindi.
