LDMG UPDATE #7

Published on 27 March 2026

Balonne Local Disaster Management Group

The Balonne Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) has moved from STAND-UP status to STAND-DOWN status following welcomed inflows in the Balonne River catchment passing through the system.

Flooding in the Balonne River system peaked in St George on Friday 20 March 2026 at 7.9m and is continuing to recede with a current river height of 1.85m. Beardmore Dam is currently at 98.99% and Jack Taylor Weir is currently at 97.36%.

Recreational users of the Balonne River should be aware that the river will continue to flow, as some gates at Beardmore Dam and Jack Taylor Weir are currently open. Sunwater is slowly drawing down the water and will look to close the gates at both the Dam and Weir over the coming days.

The flood water height at Whyenbah peaked on Monday 23 March at 7.3m and is currently at 3.86m and continuing to recede.

The flood water height at Dirranbandi peaked on Tuesday 24 March at 4.71m and is currently at 3.26m and continuing to recede.

The flood water height on the Narran River between Dirranbandi and Hebel peaked this morning at 4.362m and has since receded to a height of 4.358m. There is water over the Castlereagh Highway between Dirranbandi and Hebel, but it has remained open with 0.2m over some locations during the past couple of days and the water is expected to recede over the weekend.

The flood water height at Hebel is currently at 0.929m and is expected to peak in the minor flood level over the weekend. There no significant rainfall expected in the catchment over the coming days.

Council staff are assessing road conditions and have closed and restricted a number of local roads:

  • Narline Road – Closed to all traffic
  • Commissioners Point Road – Closed to all traffic
  • Whyenbah Road – Closed to all traffic
  • Cubbie Road – Closed to all traffic
  • Woolerbilla Road – Closed to all traffic
  • Bollon-Dirranbandi Road – Re-opened with lanes affected

Road conditions are updated on Council’s Emergency Dashboard. As local roads re-open, they will require a safety assessment of the road surface prior to re-opening, however travellers should still proceed with caution once they do re-open. Remember, if its flooded forget it.

Council is assessing the potential for a future misting program to deal with mosquitoes once flood water recedes. In the interim, residents should use appropriate protection from mosquitoes in the area.
