Council pleads with residents: don't set fire to landfill

Dirranbandi Landfill is once again partially closed, after an unknown person set fire to the general waste trench on Monday.

Balonne Shire Mayor Samantha O’Toole said the unfortunate events were incredibly disappointing to Council and to Dirranbandi at large.

“Our request to the community is very simple: do not set fire to your landfill,” she said.

“Obviously this is very dangerous; this act puts our residents’ health and safety at risk, along with Council’s licence to operate the landfill. We don’t want this to continue at our facilities.”

Until the fire can be completely extinguished, and the matter fully resolved, the general waste trench at Dirranbandi Landfill cannot reopen to residents.

A temporary space to dump general waste will open in the interim. At this stage it is not known when the general waste trench will reopen to the public.

A pit filled with general waste is on fire. Flames extend above the top of the pit and thick black smoke billows from the pile.
