Carnarvon Hwy remains closed south of Mungindi

The Carnarvon Highway between Mungindi and Moree is likely to remain closed for several days due to flood damage.

Motorists wanting to drive to Moree have been advised to seek alternative routes.

Balonne Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) Chair Samantha O’Toole said the Carnarvon Highway between the two towns was expected to remain closed into next week.

“Flood damage is being repaired by New South Wales authorities but it has been extensive and those repairs probably will not be completed until some time next week,” Ms O’Toole said.

“Motorists thinking about travelling to Moree should check the Live Traffic NSW site for the latest updates.

“The Mungindi to Talwood road is also closed by flooding and motorists can get further information about this and other roads in the Balonne Shire from the ‘Emergency Dashboard’ on the Balonne Shire Council’s website.”

Ms O’Toole said flood waters in the Barwon River at Mungindi were expected to peak today at around 7.2 metres, well below the 2011 flood height of 7.7 metres.

“Authorities are standing by should any assistance be needed. So far, a dozen properties on the Queensland side of the border have been resupplied but no evacuations are expected.

“We are still advising Mungindi residents to boil their drinking water until further notice.”
