Severe heatwave warning issued for Balonne

Back

Temperatures are forecast to catapult to 'severe heatwave' levels over the coming days in Balonne Shire, and residents are urged to prepare.

Forecasts indicate temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celcius could impact the region between 26th November and 2nd December - about 12 degrees above the November average.

During this period of above-average temperatures, the Balonne Local Disaster Management Group recommends:

  • Keeping well hydrated with extra water on hand at all times.
  • Checking in on elderly neighbours.
  • Taking extra water supplies when travelling, and informing friends and relatives of your anticipated arrival times in case of a breakdown.
  • Staying in the shade where possible.
  • Ensuring pets and livestock are well hydrated and have access to multiple water sources.
  • Not leaving children or animals in vehicles.
  • Taking care when swimming in local waterways.
  • Using sun safety measures including sunscreen and a broad-brimmed hat.

Local Disaster Management Group Chair, Mayor Samantha O’Toole is urging all Balonne Shire residents to take additional precautions in soaring temperatures, and look after each other.

"Our oldest and youngest residents are most at risk when a heatwave hits, so we encourage everyone to check on their neighbours and ensure they are well," she said.

"Heat-related illness can become very serious if not managed quickly, and in some cases can be fatal; in a medical emergency, always call 000."
