Council encouraging revival for Balonne's landmark events

Balonne Shire Council is throwing a lifeline to local events which would normally attract tourists to the region but have had to postpone due to COVID-19.
Council is offering up to $6000 per event through a new round of the Tourism Events Grant Funding Program and encourages any community group looking to hold an event which attracts tourists to the Shire in the first half of next year to apply.
There is a range of categories available to suit different groups and events. Established shire events can receive funding in various categories; Regional Events can receive up to $2000, Destination Events up to $3000, and Major Events up to $6000.
Alternatively, one-off funding of up to $2000 can be granted for the development of new tourism events for the Shire.
In the previous round of funding, popular Shire events including Battle on the Balonne, the St George 399, and the St George show had been granted funds. While the events have had to postpone due to COVID-19, at this stage they are planning to go ahead in 2021.
Balonne Shire Mayor Samantha O’Toole said tourism events will be vital to the region’s economic recovery after COVID-19.
“Tourism brings a significant income to our Shire and benefits all local businesses in some way. Now more than ever we need to ensure our Shire captures visitors who are travelling around Queensland and events are one of the best ways to do this,” she said.
Events looking to run between 1 January – 30 June 2021 are encouraged to apply for the grant.
