Balonne Shire has an abundance of bird species, for keen birdwatchers many of the rivers and creeks attract a wealth of birdlife.

 

Bollon

 

Thrushton National Park

Situated on the northern boundary of Balonne Shire is Thrushton National Park. The park is home to a vast array of native flora and fauna, with a large collection of birds for the avid birdwatcher. The park is accessible by dirt road, and visitors are expected to be totally self sufficient, with water in particular.

Wallam Creek

Birds are often spotted in the Red River Gums that are abundant along Wallam Creek. The creek is home to over 110 species, some of which are quite rare.

Centennial Walk

On a stroll through Dirranbandi take the time to explore the unique Centennial Walk, which is a display of mosaic tiles made by the locals, each with their own story. Birdlife is plentiful so keep a sharp eye!

Hebel

 

Culgoa Floodplain National Park

Culgoa Floodplain National Park is on the Queensland-New South Wales border, approximately 67km south west of Hebel. Situated where the mulga lands meet a section of the brigalow, the park has diverse habitats and more plant and animal life than you might expect. it is a birdwatchers haven and home to at least 150 different bird species including some of Australia's most beautiful parrots. See red-winged, red rumped or mulga parrots and Major Mitchell cockatoos. Visitors to this park are expected to be totally self sufficient, with water, food, fuel and camping equipment. All refuse should be removed from the park. A 4WD vehicle is recommended. No domestic animals or firearms are allowed.
