The Balonne Shire Council has been working with baiting syndicates, neighbouring shires, Landcare, Queensland Murray Darling Commission and the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation to facilitate a coordinated wild dog baiting campaign. This approach is based on ongoing research and has proven effective as part of a wild dog management strategy.

This initiative comes at a critical time as the effectiveness and future of the Dingo Barrier Fence has been called into question by the Hyder Report. The report points to the number of dogs inside the fence and suggests that the fence is dividing rather than excluding dogs.

Dates for the Wild Dog Baiting Campaign are 16-20 November 2009.

The Shire has been divided up into baiting zones to facilitate Landholder involvement and a co-ordinated approach . A map of the Baiting Zones can be found below.

To ensure the Wild Dog Baiting Campaign is a success Council is seeking landholders support and is offering 40kg of dog size meat baits as an incentive for those who participate in the campaign.

Monitoring

Sodium fluoroacetate (1080), an economic, efficient and humane method of dog control will be used in the baits. A low but effective dosage rate will be used which is a very limited threat to other wildlife.

The campaign will be monitored closely and have a number of control measures put in place to minimise impacts, such as sign posting by participating landholders.
