Council
Welcome to the Balonne Shire Council Web Site. It is hoped what you read here will inspire you to come and visit us.
A region of surprising diversity and unique attractions, the Balonne Shire is rich in native bird and animal life, wide open spaces, beautiful waterways, and many historic buildings.
The waterways of the Shire are legendary for their fishing with the Balonne, Maranoa, Culgoa, Narran, Moonie and Barwon Rivers and the Wallam and Mungallala Creeks all flowing through the area, attracting fishermen in pursuit of Yellow belly and the prized Murray Cod.
Rural industry has created and is supported by the towns of St George, Dirranbandi, Bollon, Thallon, Mungindi and Hebel. Small localities such as Nindigully, Boolba and Alton are places of historic significance and important meeting places for the rural communities and the travelling public they serve.
A range of attractions are available to suit those seeking a quiet spot of fishing on the banks of the beautiful Balonne River, bird watching or following the heritage trail or for the more active, boating and water skiing.
Several spectacular events take place during the year in the Balonne Shire drawing visitors from far and wide and include Fishing Competitions, Golf and Bowls Carnivals, Country Shows & Rodeos as well as Wool, Craft & Flower Shows throughout the area.
I invite all travellers to call in at our Visitor Information Centre on the banks of the mighty Balonne River. Plan on spending a couple of days in the Shire to travel to attractions, to stroll down the streets and get the feeling of a country town or just relax on the banks of the river and enjoy the bush sounds.
So come and stay with us for a couple of days, you won’t be disappointed, and remember you can experience the true outback life, and it’s less than a days driving from Brisbane.
