Libraries

There are currently five libraries situated throughout the shire. 

For information on each library (including hours of operation and membership application forms), select the appropriate link below.

Membership of the Libraries is free for Balonne Shire residents per the electoral roll.  Please note that if you are not a Balonne Shire resident per the electoral roll, a $30 bond is payable on joining any of the Shire Libraries.  This bond is fully refundable on cessation of membership.

St. George Library has books, cassettes, videos, kits and much more to offer you.

When you become a member you are entitled to borrow up to 5 books, for as long as 3 weeks.  If you wish to have these books extended, just phone the library or call in prior to the borrowing expiry date.

Requests

If the St George Library does not have the book or subject you are after, request it!

These requests will be sent to the Public Libraries Division, Brisbane, where they will be fulfilled. Students may photocopy assignments and hand in along with their requests.

Exchanges

Every 3 months an exchange is completed to keep a fresh collection of books in the library. There are approximately 500 books in each exchange.

Fees

If books are lost or damaged, replacement fees are charged. Please remember the library is a free service offered to you. We are here to help you in every possible way. Please assist by returning items at the correct time. Books may also be left at the council administration office.

Photocopying

Due to Copyright laws the librarian is unable to provide photocopies of library materials. Members are however entitled to copy library materials and a photocopier is provided for this purpose. Enquire at counter regarding costs.

Staff

The Library is currently staffed by Tammy Jones .  Librarians are happy to assist members with any of their enquiries.

Dirranbandi Library has books, videos, talking books, magazines and much more to offer.  Members are entitled to borrow up to 6 books, for as long as 3 weeks.  Books may be extended by phoning the library or calling in.

Requests

If a book is not available in the Library it can be requested from the Public Libraries Division in Brisbane where the request will be fulfilled as soon as possible.

Exchanges

Books are exchanged on a regular basis to keep new items up to date.  Members are responsible for the books they borrow and are charged a lost or damaged fee if the book is not returned in a reasonable condition.

Fees

Please remember the library is a free service and assist by returning your items on time, as others may like to borrow them as well.  Books may also be left next door at the Dirranbandi Rural Transaction Centre.

Bollon Library

Bollon Library has Adult Fiction / Non-Fiction and large print books as well as a selection of reference books.  For children we have Fiction / Non-Fiction books available.  We also have popular magazines, cassettes, videos and books-on-tape for both children and adults.  For those travelling through the area, a range of books on local  history are available for perusal.

Requests

If a book is not available in the Library it can be requested from the Public Libraries Division in Brisbane where the majority of requests will be fulfilled as soon as possible.

Where members are unable to get into the Library, feel free to phone in your requests and the Librarian may be able to send books out to you or arrange to have them ready for you to collect when it's convenient to you.

Thallon Library

Hebel Library

Hebel library has a range of books, magazines, videos and talking books and a computer available for public use during opening hours.

There is no limit to the number of books that can be taken out provided they are returned fortnightly.  If you require an extension on a borrowing, please phone or visit the library before the due date.

Requests

Requests can be made to the Public Libraries Division for any books that are not on the shelf at the library.  These requests are on special loan for 6 weeks.  They usually take a couple of weeks to arrive depending on how popular the request is.  If you have a special project we can also order a bulk loan for a short time to fill this need.  We need at least three weeks notice where a bulk loan is required.

Fees

If books are lost or damaged, replacement fees are charged. Please remember the library is a free service offered to you by the Balonne Shire Council.

Exchanges

The Public Libraries Division exchanges 250 books every 3 months  in order to keep a fresh supply of books in the library.

Computer

The library has a computer that is available for use by the public.  Charges are applicable for the use of this service.

Home Service

If you are unable to get to the library due to illness or incapacitation, books can be taken to your home if you reside within the town area of Hebel.  Just let the librarian know and arrangements can then be made.

Photocopying

Currently Hebel Library does not have a photocopier, but it is hoped that within the next few months this will change.  At the moment, where a small number of copies is desired, these can be scanned onto the computer and printed.  Enquire at counter regarding costs.

Staff

The Library is currently staffed by Jann Buck.  Shelly Johnston provides relief for Jann during periods of leave.  Both librarians are happy to assist members with any of their enquiries.
